Pediatric Enema

Constipation can be a common problem for some children. Constipation means passing hard stools (feces) with great difficulty. Regular soiling (mistaken as diarrhea) may indicate that a child has bad constipation with impaction (a blockage of feces). Constipation in children often results pain and discomfort for the child and results in anxiety for the parent.

Having your child avoid the pain of constipation make sure they are drinking lots of fluids. In hot weather be sure they are replenishing often and add a high fiber diet to help with evacuation. Fruit too should be added to the diet, 1 cup of fruit and 1 cup of vegetables a day. Remember that fruit juice is no substitute for real fruit and contains a lot of sugar.

Increase the amount of high-briber foods such as bran flaks, bran muffins, oatmeal, brown rice, beans and unbuttered unsalted popcorn. Whole wheat bread instead of white bread will also help.

As a parent set a good example for your child by drinking plenty of fluids and eating a high fiber diet as a balanced diet is key to avoiding constipation.

Do not use this medication in children younger than 2 years of age.

  • Enemas are useful for severe constipation.
  • Enemas should be used only when necessary.
  • Encourage your child to drink lots of water always.
  • For repeat constipation problems please consult with a doctor.
